The senses….The gifts of taste, touch, sight, hearing and smell. IMO…God has given us these gifts for our benefit and our blessing.
After all…in the gift of taste we have a treasure trove of experience…sweet, savory, bitter, refreshing etc. Through touch, we experience the pleasure of touching the cheek of our children or grand children or the body of our spouse, we feel the softness of sheets against our skin or the warming rays of the sun. In sight, we observe the beauty of our natural world, the inspiration of a cactus in bloom or the pain in the eyes of a friend. Hearing reaches the soul and allows for us to respond equally to the cries of a child in need or a symphonic melody. We rely on smell to stimulate, enhance or warn the other senses into action or simply delight our hearts with the scent of a rose.
The difficulty we run into is when we allow our carnal nature to distort our senses, and in effect, loose all Spiritual sense. It pretty much all boils down to that wicked perversion of the senses…lust.
When we allow lust to alter our sense of taste, that extra piece of cake or serving of mashed potatoes can’t be resisted. We fail to recognize that we are no longer eating for fuel required by the body but instead we are feeding a troubled heart. This distortion leads to physical ailments we were never intended to have.
When lust is allowed to alter our sense of touch, it will slice through to the deepest chambers of our minds faster than an Olympic swimmer can stroke through the waters of competition, leaving destruction in its wake.
When we allow lust to alter our sense of sight, it has the capacity to distort our perspective of life…the lingering glance that lasted a little too long…the movie we know we should turn off or those images that have no business on our computer screen.
If we allow lust to alter our sense of hearing we feed our hearts and minds with things that lead us to wrong thinking…the song that reinforces an inappropriate desire or fuels our anger or depression…feeding on the understanding words of a colleague after having a fight with our spouse.
When lust is allowed to distort our sense of smell, it can fuel all the other senses to join in the party…whether it is a delightful cologne or perfume or a freshly baked cookie or loaf of bread.
Wikipedia says “A sense is a physiological capacity of organisms that provides data for perception.”
When we fail to filter our perception through the Holy Spirit, life goes askew.
Galatians 5:16-17(AMP) But I say, walk and live [habitually] in the [Holy] Spirit [responsive to and controlled and guided by the Spirit]; then you will certainly not gratify the cravings and desires of the flesh (of human nature without God). For the desires of the flesh are opposed to the [Holy] Spirit, and the [desires of the] Spirit are opposed to the flesh (godless human nature); for these are antagonistic to each other [continually withstanding and in conflict with each other], so that you are not free but are prevented from doing what you desire to do.
We need to take our focus off our senses, especially when they are distorted, and follow the direction we have been given…
Galatians 5:25(MSG) Since this is the kind of life we have chosen, the life of the Spirit, let us make sure that we do not just hold it as an idea in our heads or a sentiment in our hearts, but work out its implications in every detail of our lives.
“EVERY detail of our lives”!
Remember…God loves us, has forgiven us, has paid the price for us, has redeemed us through the blood of His Son, watches over us and has provided us with an owners manual…How wonderful is that.?!?
