“Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.” ~ Marie Curie

There is a resort close to my home which includes a rental car office to service their traveling clientele. Yesterday, I had to take Mr. Gypsy over to pick up a car for a business trip. When we pulled in and drove past the round-about, I stopped so Mr. Gypsy could get out and walk into the office. The valet attendant came over to my side of the car so I rolled the window down and said “That’s ok, I’m just dropping him off to get a car.” To which he smilingly replied “Oh, ok. have a great day!” He understood my intent.

So…after Mr. Gypsy got out, I spotted the vehicle he was getting (yeah…we knew ahead of time) and pulled over to park beside it so once the paperwork was complete, we could unload all his needed items from my vehicle into his and he could be on his way to the meeting.

Well…After carefully backing in the space, I turned around to front facing again and the attendant was back at my window… “I’m sorry, this is for valet parking” he said. He didn’t have enough information to understand what I was doing. I replied with a big smile… “OH! I know, I’m just parked here so my husband can transfer his things to the rental car.” He looked at me for a minute then he understood and said “Oh, ok.” He started to walk away but stopped and asked “Are you staying here?” (I took that to mean at the resort) I said “No. Just getting the rental.” He asked “Are you staying with the car?” I said “OH! Yes…I’ll be with the car!” He then said “Alright, hope you have a great day!”

Clearly, I didn’t understand his question but after he explained and asked differently I had a moment of clarity, understood what he meant and was able to correctly answer his question.

The longer you spend with a person, the more you talk, the closer you listen, the more you understand. And, once again, such is the case with our Heavenly Father.

The more time we spend with Him, the more we talk to Him (prayer), the closer we listen to Him , the more understanding we have of Him and His ways and therefore of His purpose for us. We walk out of our tunnel vision into a world of Divine understanding. The opposite is also true…If we don’t spend time with God and in His Word how can we hope to understand anything?

Jeremiah 9:24(AMP) But let him who glories glory in this: that he understands and knows Me [personally and practically, directly discerning and recognizing My character], that I am the Lord, Who practices loving-kindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth, for in these things I delight, says the Lord.

Jesus said… Matthew 15:10 (ESV) And he called the people to him and said to them, “Hear and understand…” that statement alone implies there is something more to “understanding” than simply sitting on a pew every Sunday morning and “hearing”.

In some circumstances, we gain our understanding through hindsight (Do I hear an Amen?!) however that same understanding can be used in current and future situations. As we begin to enter into righteous understanding with the Holy Spirit, suddenly our instruction to not “fear” or “worry” makes sense because we understand it spiritually.

Colossians 1:9(MSG) Be assured that from the first day we heard of you, we haven’t stopped praying for you, asking God to give you wise minds and spirits attuned to his will, and so acquire a thorough understanding of the ways in which God works.

May we spend the time necessary to acquire a thorough understanding of the ways of God and glory in that we know Him.

Remember…Understanding comes through a relationship, not a book.

In Him,
