As a Chef by trade and someone who thoroughly enjoys playing with food, I have been blessed with the priviledge of doing some food styling for a photo shoot. The shoot was for patio furniture and I styled the food for the grill shot. Steak kabobs, corn on the cob, artichokes, peppers and a full, patio bar with lemons and oranges and cherries, OH MY! (Hey! I TOLD you I like to play with food!) ANYHOW…It was fascinating to watch the process.
The morning was a flurry of setting up the furniture collections in just the right position for the various shots. Guys were moving things around at the instructions of the Creative Director, the photographer was getting all his equipment set up and ready to go, set stylists were frantically propping the furniture and me…Meh…I was playing with food.
Shutters started clicking and the pace picked up. New furniture, new props, new sets. Repeat. Next thing I knew it was time for the lunch break.
When shooting outdoors it is a race against the sun. You chase it all morning to get the right light and contrast then at noon, when it is directly overhead all that ambiance is gone so you have to break and wait for it to return in the afternoon.
Well, the speed of the afternoon made it look like the morning was done in slow motion. Again…chasing the sun. Only this time you’re at the end and what needs to be completed needs to be done in record time…before the sun sets. At the end of the day, there was an obvious fatigue on the faces of everyone as they silently wished “We just need another 30 minutes. That’s all.” But, ya know what? Time was up. The sun, in all it’s glory, was setting.
Part of the definition of “chasing” is…
To follow rapidly in order to catch or overtake; pursue:
To seek the favor or company of persistently
To go or follow in pursuit
As Believers, what are we chasing? When someone outside the faith looks at us do they see someone actively chasing the God of the Heavens or the god of the earth? Is the manifest presence of God the highest ranking on our list or is it the latest fashion, most recent movie, hottest musical group, newest television show, the bills, whatever. Is there an obvious difference between our lifestyle and theirs?
There are 24 hours in a day. Aside from the physical requirements of our day (work, school, meals, cleaning etc.)…How is the balance spent? At church? In a Bible study? Fellowship? Prayer? Football? American Idol? CSI?
Are we chasing the Son?
May we find ourselves, humbly and hungrily, chasing after the heart of God…as He waits, that we find ourselves ready when the Son sets His feet on the Mount of Olives and declares “Time is up.”
Oh yeah…that last shot of the day? When the sun was setting? Spectacular!
